Product PLU - Modifier POS Keys

Touch > Change Modifier (#119) and Modifier (#108) POS Keys

Description

This feature provides the ability to sell Products quickly in multiple quantities/sizes and to also Up/Down size in hindsight. For example, Beer can be sold as a Pot, Schooner, Pint, Jug, etc. Or, Coffee can be sold as Small, Regular or Large. Using this feature, Clerks/Staff are able to quickly select the type of Beer/Coffee and then their respective size. This feature enables a minimum number of POS Keys to be configured at the SwiftPOS Touch terminal. In addition to this the modifiers can be prioritised and ordered to reflect the quantities/sizes most commonly sold.

The difference between the Change Modifier and Modifier POS Keys is:

  • Change Modifier POS Keys - Requires an item to be selected in the sales grid prior to the Change Modifier POS Key being selected, otherwise by default, it will apply to the last item sold.
  • Modifier POS Key - Requires the Modifier POS Key to be selected prior to the Base PLU Product being selected and added to the sale.

To Be Considered

  1. If required, restricting access to this POS Key can be managed by Clerk Security.
  2. Ensure Products are created for each type (for example, Cappuccino, Cafe Latte, Mocha Latte, etc) and for each quantity/size thereof (for example, Small, Regular and Large). Each Product created need to have a PLU Number assigned to it. The PLU Number will not appear at the SwiftPOS Touch terminal. It is recommended to allocate PLU Numbers in a high range when creating the Products. The PLU Numbers for each Product created must be numbered such that they support the PLU Offsets assigned to the Modifier POS Keys for the quantity/size selection. For examples in the case of Coffees, the Base PLU Product for Cappuccinos would be the Cappuccino Regular size with a PLU Number 13401, then the Cappuccino Small would have a PLU Number of 13400 (If the Modifier POS Key with the Caption Small had a PLU Offset of -1). The Cappuccino Large would have a PLU Number of 13402 (If the Modifier POS Key with the Caption Large had a PLU Offset of +1). The Modifier POS Key with the Caption Regular had a PLU Offset of 0. The Cappuccino Regular size would appear as a Product POS Key on the Keyboard Layout (Click here for an example thereof). For examples of PLU Numbering click here.
  3. It is also recommended to leave blank PLU's between ranges so that items can be added at a future date.
  4. Note : It is difficult to re-allocate PLU numbers once trading has started.

Pre-Requisites

  1. Ensure the Finalise Change Modifier and Modifier POS Keys are added to the appropriate Layout using the Keyboard Designer.
  2. Ensure Products are created for each type (for example, Cappuccino, Cafe Latte, Mocha Latte, etc) and for each quantity/size thereof (for example, Small, Regular and Large). The PLU Numbers for each Product created must be numbered such that they support the PLU Offsets assigned to the Modifier POS Keys for the quantity/size selection. For examples of PLU Numbering click here.

Operation

  1. Sell items using Modifier POS Keys

    1. At the SwiftPOS Touch terminal, select the quantity/size Modifier POS Key. For example Small/Regular/Large in the case of Coffees. Or in the case of Beer, a Pot/Schooner/Pint/Jug.
    2. Select the Base PLU Product. For example, Cappuccino/Cafe Latte/Mocha Latte/etc in the case of Coffees. Or in the case of Beer a Hahn Lite/VB/XXXX/etc.
    3. Depending on the selection made above the appropriate Product will appear in the sales grid.
    4. Finalise the sale.

  1. Up/Down Size using Change Modifier POS Keys

    1. Sell items using Modifier POS Keys as described above.
    2. The customer changes their mind and instead wants to Up/Down size one of the items already appearing in the sales grid.
    3. Select the item in the sales grid and select either the Up/Down size POS Key. These would be Change Modifier POS Keys with the Captions Up Size and Down Size.
    4. The price of the item selected should change to reflect the Up/Down size selected.
    5. Finalise the sale. Note : This presupposes that the PLU Numbers assigned to the different sized Products are in sequential order to ensure the Up/Down sizing functions correctly.

Modifier POS Key Settings

This screen is accessed from here.

  • Ignore Category - Select to ensure that the Category of Products is ignored when the PLU offset is applied.

  • Category - Select from the drop down list the Category of Products to which the PLU offset will apply. Products in other Categories will ignore the Modifier POS Key if selected first.

  • PLU Offset: The numeric offset from the Base PLU Product POS Key selected. NB. This can be a positive or negative value.

Examples of POS Key Layouts using Modifiers

For both the Change Modifier and Modifier POS Keys in the example above, the Category of Products assigned to the POS Keys could be Hot Beverage.

Note : Use the UP/DOWN Size POS Keys to change the original order. This can only be done while the items ordered still appear in the sales grid and have not been finalised.

For both the Change Modifier and Modifier POS Keys in the example above, the Category of Products assigned to the POS Keys could be Bulk Beer.
